Did you know that you can use your Instagram content on Pinterest?
A lot of small and medium size businesses are reluctant to start using Pinterest for their digital marketing efforts as they are afraid they don’t have enough content. They might be a product-based company but only sell a select amount of products, they might be a service-based company but don’t like blogging.
But you know what? Pinterest is not just about blog posts or products. If you do not have a lot of content but you are active on Instagram, you have plenty to start with! And who knows it might even grow your instagram followers.
On Instagram posts normally live for about 48 hours. People find your content there and then. It is unlikely for people to find your posts after this time-frame unless they go into your profile and search in your grid. By putting your instagram posts on Pinterest your content will ‘live’ longer so you can drive more traffic and engagement to your Instagram content for a longer period of time. It is crucial for your small business marketing. So let’s have a look at how it works.
First things first
Before you start, make sure you have claimed your instagram account in your Pinterest settings. This is easy to do. Just go to Settings ->Claim.
By doing this Pinterest will pull all your information from Instagram across and you will get access to analytics. Also, when someone pins your instagram post to one of their boards your profile information is attached to that pin.
The first and most obvious type of instagram content you can use on Pinterest is your Instagram posts. How does that work I can hear you ask?
There are two ways of doing this. With a scheduler like Tailwind, you can schedule all your instagram posts directly into Pinterest. Now there is one catch with this method, because you will need to repurpose it slightly as it is best when you alter the pin title and pin description. Most instagram posts are too long for Pinterest so you will need to adjust them. Also it is important that you put relevant keywords relating to your ideal client and/or niche.
The second option is to create a new pin template with ration 2:3 for your instagram post and link it to the post. This method is more time consuming but is better as Pinterest prefers long pins
The last thing you will need to do is to reduce your hashtags to two maximum. Remember Pintererst is a visual search engine and not a social media platform. The majority of pinners do not search on hashtags, although some do!
Did you know that you can repurpose the content you create for your Instagram stories for Pinterest as well? It is a little bit more complicated but if you do not have a lot of other content then why re-invent the wheel!
First rule is that from now on you are going to save all your stories so you can use them on Pinterest in the future. Here is how to do it.
In your Instagram Stories tap the 3 little dots in the right hand bottom corner, from here save the Stories you want to save.
You can save them as a photo, each separately or you can save your story as a video.
Next you create a pin in Pinterest like you normally do, using your downloads from Instagram. The photos will turn into static pins and if you download your Insta Stories as a video they will show up as a video! And we all know that Pinterest LOVES videos at the moment!
IGTV videos can be repurposed for Pinterest as well, marvellous isn’t it? Now I haven’t done this yet as I haven’t created any videos yet, it is next on my to-do list, so watch this space!
But here is how to do it: In your instagram grid choose the video you want to use on Pinterest. Click on that video so you get the close-up. In the top right corner you will see 3 dots, click them and choose ‘copy link’. This is the link you need for Pinterest!
Now go to Pinterest and create a new pin. At the bottom choose ‘save from website’ and put the URL in that you have just copied from Instagram. This will bring up the right video to create the pin. Next create the pin title, description etc and save to the relevant boards. And voila IGTV saved as a pin!
And last but not least Instagram Reels! Yes you can also use reels on Pinterest as you can convert them into Pinterest Story Pins. Unfortunately Story Pins are not available in the UK yet so this is material for another time. I will keep you posted!
One more thing
To make life even easier you can use Tailwind to schedule your repurposed Instagram content in Pinterest! And of course you can use it to schedule your Instagram posts as well. Win win!
