How many pins do you need to pin each day is the million dollar question, isn’t it? Unfortunately, and you are not going to like this, there is no straightforward answer to this. Don’t get disheartened by this though because there are things you can do. It all depends on how long you have been on Pinterest and the size of your business. A word of caution though: it will take time to figure out how often you should be pinning as it takes trial and error. There is no such thing as the perfect Pinterest strategy, it depends from company to company.
Ok, let’s dive into this question.
How Many Pins Per Day?
If you have been on Pinterest for a little while you probably know that there are a lot of different opinions about how many pins you should be pinning per day. There are companies out there which pin over 50 pins a day. But there are also companies that pin less than 10 and if you ask them they will both say that their pinning strategy is working for their business.
In a webinar between Pinterest and Tailwind back in February 2020 and again at the end of the year, above question popped up. Both Pinterest and Tailwind both advise against pinning more than 50 pins a day as you can come across as spammy. This is something you want to avoid at all cost as Pinterest can suspend your account.
In 2021 it is not so much about how many pins you pin, it is more about the quality of the content you are pinning. Pinterest likes new fresh content, hence repinning other people’s content is a bit out of fashion in 2021. When you are new to Pinterest, start with pinning 1-2 pieces of your own content and maybe add 1 pin from a third party. Wait and see what happens to your statistics. Remember with Pinterest you are in it for the long run, don’t rush it. If you are getting good results with this slowly start building it up and start extending your own content. This might take a little while but that is ok. Remember no company is the same, some pin 5, some pin 25. If 5 pins (remember mainly own content) works for your business and you are getting good results then that is great!
Pinning can be done manually, but it is much easier to use a scheduler like Tailwind. This way you can do all your pinning in one go so you don’t have to think about it for a week/month!
After you have set up your pinning schedule, keep monitoring. Obviously we want our statistics to go up but It is possible you hit a plateau at a certain point or your stats even drop. If that happens, go back into your analytics and see what has changed. You might need to add a few more pins a day, it might be a seasonal change. The key is to keep monitoring.
Like everyone else I have had to learn with trial and error. I started with 5 pins a day but I soon found out that was not working for my account so I put it up to 10. Phasing out other people’s content is still the main objective for me and I have now found out that 7 is my magic number for now.
What Is Important When Pinning
So, unfortunately, there is no magic number when it comes to how many pins you should be pinning each day. But there are a few elements you need to keep in mind when pinning in order to optimise your strategy. These are:
- Fresh content
- Pin titles & descriptions
Consistency is key when you are using Pinterest. This means that it is important to pin each day. Pinterest does not like it when you pin 3 pins one day, then not show up for a couple of days and then pin 15 the next. This is why a scheduling tool like Tailwind is great as you can set the amount of pins per day. And it gives you the option to schedule all your pins once a week, leaving the rest of the week free to concentrate on other aspects of your business.
You will have heard that Pinterest is all about new, fresh content. This is a topic for a whole different blog post but in principle this means that you can’t use the same image for 10 different boards. The first board a pin template is pinned to is called ‘fresh content’, when you then pin this same image to other boards it is not fresh anymore. It is therefore important to spread out your pins between different boards.
Pin Titles & Descriptions
In order to get more saves and link clicks it is important to optimise your pin titles and descriptions with the right keywords. You have 100 characters for the pin title and up to 500 for your description. Plenty of space to put the right keywords in.
Although it is hard to pinpoint how many pins you need to pin every day, we do know the following:
- When new to Pinterest start with pinning your own content, one a day
- Do not pin more than 50 pins per day
- Use a scheduling tool like Tailwind
- Always try and concentrate on pinning your own content over other pinners’ content
- Slowly up your pinning schedule, keeping an eye on your statistics
- Consistency is key, who up every day
- Add specific keywords to your pin titles and pin descriptions
